India: UNDP-MNRE Workshop Addresses Solar Process Heat Business Development

Intersolar UNDPThe International Workshop on Concentrating Solar Technologies set a new record in participation: Over 150 delegates attended the event in November in Mumbai organised by the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the auspices of the UNDP-GEF project on Concentrated Solar Heat (CSH). Its highlight: the discussions with industry experts and programme officials, during which the industry stakeholders called for greater R&D budgets and a performance-based incentive.

India: First Solar Thermal Steam Storage for Cooking Applications

India Steam StorageThe Ramakrishna Mission Student’s Home in the city of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state on India’s southeast coast, is a combined residential high school and polytechnic college. It caters for around 700 orphan and poor students by providing free education, food and accommodation each year. The kitchen, which is supplied by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), has witnessed a sudden increase in costs because reductions in subsidies have led to rising energy prices. Hence, the mission’s management decided on a solar concentrating system in order to reduce LPG demand for cooking. The dish concentrator was installed three months ago.

Germany: World Map of Solar Process Heat Collector Industry 2014

World Map Process HeatThere is enormous demand for industrial heat in the temperature range between 100 and 250 °C all around the world, and solar thermal technologies are said to play an important role in covering this demand over the next decades. A joint project by magazine Sun & Wind Energy and German agency solrico was to find out which companies offer solar process heat collectors, what technology they focus on and how many commercial projects they have already realised. The results of the global survey now make up the first World Map of the Solar Process Heat Collector Industry, which was published in the March edition of Sun & Wind Energy and is also available for download on solrico´s website

India: Ministry Presents Awards to Eight Solar Thermal Manufacturers

On 17 December 2014, the Indian Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, presented in New Delhi awards to the most successful Channel Partners of the national solar thermal subsidy scheme. In front of around 250 participants from policy, industry and media, Dr Abdullah (third from right) announced the ten winners of National Solar Thermal Awards in the solar water heater category and, for the first time, in the category of concentrating solar thermal (CST) collectors. The awards recognised manufacturers achieving the highest total sales, the highest growth rates, the best dealer network and the highest export rates (see the table below).

Intersolar India 2013: Conference Focuses on Solar Process Heat

Going into its fifth year, the annual Intersolar India conference is expecting 700 national and international attendees, as well as roughly 100 speakers from all around the world. The international event, which will take place in the Leela Kempinski Hotel in Mumbai from 11 to 14 November 2013, will set the stage for discussing current conditions and developments in international markets, with a special focus on the Indian market and the latest technologies and trends in the areas of photovoltaics, PV production technologies, energy storage and solar thermal technologies (find more information about the conference programme here). The exhibition with around 200 companies at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC), Mumbai, will run from 12 to 14 November, opening its doors one day after the start of the conference. As many as 7,296 visitors filled Hall 1 at the BCEC last year (see photo).

India: Quarterly Sun Focus Magazine Presents Concentrating Solar Heat

The Project on Concentrated Solar Heat by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and India´s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has published the first issue of Sun Focus (see the attached document). The English-language magazine offers statistics on the market and showcases concentrating solar heat projects to make the technology more popular in India. According to the new publication, India has 145 concentrating solar thermal systems producing steam across the country, with 111 of them built over the past five years (see the table below). The dish is the country’s most popular design for concentrating solar heat and cooking is its most widespread application.

India: “The industry is one of the biggest energy consumers in the country”

Indian company Clique Solar was among the award winners at this year’s Intersolar India in November 2012. For the first time, the international fair presented its Intersolar Award in the category of Solar Projects. The three awards went to outstanding projects in the categories of Industrial and Commercial Use, Off-Grid Solutions, and Utility Scale Projects. Clique Solar was founded in 1987 by a group of experienced engineers. The company is one of the very few in the region that has focused on expanding solar energy use in industrial process heat through R&D. One of the successful technologies developed by Clique Solar is the patented concentrating solar thermal system based on ARUN dishes. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with the two promoters of the company, Dr Shireesh B Kedare (left) and Ashok Paranjape, about their country, the new technology and their solar business.

India: Two 160 m² Solar Dishes Supply Steam to New Delhi’s Sheraton Hotel

 Concentrator system with Arun Dishes” Within 18-month time, the first solar concentrator system with Arun Dishes has been installed successfully on a hotel roof in India. Indian company Clique Solar began to set up the solar steam installation at ITC Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi, in November 2009. The ITC hotel group is a “green” luxury hotel chain. Total project costs, including installation, amounted to around INR 8.5 million. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy contributed INR 2.4 million in subsidies to it. Taking the 30% grant into account, the investment will pay back in 5 to 6 years. The photo shows an Arun Dish system with an aperture area of 160 m² (mirror area), which concentrates the sunlight in one point.
