#SolarThermal: Increasing Visibility through Harmonised Hashtags

HashtagsThe solar heating and cooling (SHC) sector needs to increase visibility on social media channels. This was the shared belief of the three major SHC institutions – the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF), the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA SHC) and solarthermalworld.org – which met at the beginning of 2016 to discuss relevant strategies. The group saw Twitter as an important communication channel among policy makers, lobbyists and industry associations – a tool which is also used by a growing number of journalists worldwide for their research. The institutions decided to campaign for harmonised hashtags regarding content related to solar heating and cooling on Twitter, in order to increase visibility and improve the search functionality.

From 2 to 4 December 2015, the SHC2015 conference in Istanbul brought together 233 researchers, industry specialists and other experts on solar heating and cooling. With 14 video interviews filmed at the conference, solarthermalworld.org highlighted the trends and pinpointed the crucial issues of today's global solar heating and cooling sector. The videos were jointly financed by the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and the European Copper Association. They are available for download on the solarthermalworld.org YouTube channel.
 

SMEThermal 2014: “Take the risk away from the customer and the financier”

SMEThermal 2014Solar thermal is not just about technology, it´s also about financing. It takes much more than just an improved, mature technology to have a successful industry. It needs new business models which attract the financial sector and it requires transparency in terms of performance and costs when dealing with commercial clients. These were the major topics of a roundtable discussion at SMEThermal 2014 in Berlin, Germany, on 18 February 2014. Solar thermal specialists from three different continents – Europe, Asia and North America – presented their case studies at the conference (from left): Søren Elisiussen, CEO of Arcon Solar (Denmark), Nicholas Atkins, Managing Partner of Georgieff Capital Advisors (United Kingdom), Thippegowda Srinath, Technical Director at Emmvee Solar Systems (India), Justin Schafer, Product Manager at Skyline Innovations (USA) and Robin Welling, Managing Director of Tisun (Austria). The roundtable discussion was chaired by Bärbel Epp, Managing Director of solrico (Germany).

France: Solar Thermal Energy under Review

On 11 October, around 100 solar thermal specialists followed the invitation of the French Environment and Energy Management Agency, ADEME, to Paris, France, in order to discuss the unsatisfying situation of the French solar heating and cooling market. The meeting included a presentation of the results of the recently finalised study “Analysis of the competitiveness and development of the solar thermal sector in France” (official summary not yet available). An action plan is intended to show the industry how to become more competitive.

Solarthermalworld.org Quiz: All-rounder Win Prizes

The three winners, who were announced at the third day of the fair, came from three different countries as well. Daniel Mugnier (center), researcher at French company Tecsol SA, and German Uwe Trenkner (right), from Trenkner Consulting in Brussels, scored best in the 10-question quiz. The best quiz participant from outside Europe was Chris Beebe (left), CEO of Beam Engineering, a company located in Boston, Massachusetts.

Germany: Solar Thermal Experts Discuss Cost-Cutting Strategies

 Audience at SMEThermal 2012The solar thermal industry is facing major challenges: Costs of storage and collector components have to be reduced even further if large solar plants are to offer investors competitive prices for heating. Hence, 170 industry representatives and scientists from all around the world came together at the international industry conference SMEThermal 2012 in Berlin at the beginning of February 2012 to explore cost-cutting strategies during a round-table discussion.

Swiss Bank Sarasin: World Market Reaches 45 GWth in 2011

 Sarasin StudyThis week, the Swiss Bank Sarasin published the 12th edition of their solar industry report, covering all three solar technologies: solar heating and cooling (ST), photovoltaics (PV), and concentrating solar power (CSP). The chapter on solar thermal identifies great differences in the market development of national markets and regions. While the Chinese market continues to shine, many European countries are suffering from decreasing or stagnating markets. Nevertheless, Sarasin predicts a great future, with a global average growth of 12% per year until 2020.
