China: Much Work Needed to Meet 2020 Square-Metre Target of 0.8 Billion

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on January 30, 2017
CSTIFTwo large industry events in China over the last months have shown that there is great demand for discussion regarding the transformation of the domestic solar heating and cooling market. The Green Business Forum attracted around 1,000 solar thermal stakeholders to Dezhou in Shandong province from 22 to 25 September, and several hundred industry representatives took part in the annual assembly of the Chinese Solar Thermal Industry Federation (CSTIF) from 7 to 9 December in Kunming, Yunnan province (see photo). According to the latest CSTIF figures, the solar thermal market experienced a sharp 9 % decline last year from 43.5 million m² to 39.5 million m² (30.5 to 27.7 GWth), which reduced it to 60 % of the size it had had in the peak year of 2013.

China: Challenges and Opportunities of World’s Largest Solar Thermal Market

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on June 27, 2016
Reduced real estate investment has been the key reason for the strong decline of China’s solar thermal market. In 2015, the collector area installed annually was down to 43.5 million m² (30.5 GWth), which almost put the figure back to the level of 2009, and the growth rates in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 were -18 % and -17 % respectively. The chart on annual output was taken from a presentation by He Tao, Professor at the China Academy of Building Research. He held it during the Executive Committee Meeting of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme in Spain at the beginning of June. When presenting the numbers, the professor also emphasised that the industry “has made great efforts to find new applications for space heating, solar process heat and space cooling” (see the attached presentation).

China: SHC 2014 and Solar Thermal Industry Exhibition

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on September 30, 2014
SHC ChinaAfter San Francisco, USA, and Freiburg, Germany, this year’s venue for the International Conference on Solar Heating and Cooling for Buildings and Industry is going to be the Chinese capital, Beijing. Researchers from all around the world have been invited to attend the annual scientific conference of the International Energy Agency’s Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA SHC) between 13 and 15 October 2014. The three-day conference, which will be held at the China National Convention Center (see the photo above), will be jointly organised by German PSE and the China Academy of Building Research (CABR).

SHC 2013: “Be transparent about the performance”

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on October 7, 2013

Europe’s first International Conference on Solar Heating and Cooling for Buildings and Industry, the SHC 2013, has been a success. Between 23 and 25 September, around 400 participants from 37 different countries met in Freiburg in the south of Germany to discuss research, technology and market-related issues. This was almost double the number of experts which had joined the first SHC conference last year in San Francisco. The 15 keynote speeches, 90 oral and 140 poster presentations covered a huge variety of topics from engineering and new materials to enhancing already available products.

China: Industry Increased Export Business 12-fold

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on February 2, 2012

Solar Water Heater Market in China Within 6 years, the Chinese solar thermal industry increased its export business 12-fold, from USD 20 million in 2005 to USD 250 million in 2010. In 2011, the newly installed collector area in China has jumped up another 18 % to 57.6 million m2 (40.3 GWth). Putting the focus on solar technology has proven to be the right step: Nowadays, significantly more new solar water heaters are being installed per year than gas or electric water heaters (see chart). These and other market figures were presented by the retired head of the China Solar Thermal Industry Federation (CSTIF), Zhentao Luo, during the IEA SHC roadmap workshop in Beijing in November 2011 (see attached presentation in Chinese).

China: Major Fairs for Solar Thermal in 2011

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on January 17, 2011

Solar Thermal China Logo” China is the largest market for solar thermal products in the world. The annual production of solar water heaters grew from 6.1 million m2 in 2000 to 42 million m2 in 2009. The importance of the solar thermal sector produced lots of regional and national trade fairs. Chinese Company Sunrain, the largest manufacturer of vacuum tube collectors worldwide, has recommended the visit of three fairs, which were the major events for solar thermal technology in China in 2011. The new international Solar Thermal China exhibition by German trade fair organiser Koelnmesse has additionally been added to the list below. It will take place in June for the first time.
