Germany: Crowd Lending or Cooperatives – Different Ways to Bring Solar District Heating into Focus

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on April 24, 2015
Trier SolarvereinRenewable heat comes out on top whenever it substituted fossil energy, Swiss solar thermal pioneer Josef Jenni stated during the first panel discussion of the conference on district heating with solar and biomass, which was held in the German city of Trier on 16 and 17 April 2015. Organised by the local solar association, Solarverein, it provided a platform for experts from small and medium-sized industrial companies, universities and research institutes based in Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Austria and Luxemburg to work on turning this objective into a reality by focusing on viable business models of renewable use in district heating systems.

Switzerland: New Factory for Large Storage Tanks

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on December 2, 2013

Swiss tank manufacturer Jenni Energietechnik is about to complete its new production line for large solar tanks in the Swiss town of Oberburg. The company invested Swiss Franc (CHF) 14 million in machinery and a four-storey building. The first tanks are said to leave the factory at the beginning of 2014. The expansion already started in the second half of 2011. Jenni plans to use the new production line to manufacture tanks between 700 litres and 200 m³. The photo shows the new multi-coil cutting machine that can process steel coils with a thickness of up to 6 mm. So far, the old line has only been able to cut steel coils of up to 3 mm. Thicker sheets had to be cut and transported to Oberburg from another company.

Germany: ENERGETIKhaus100 Reaches up to 98% Solar Coverage

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on March 13, 2013

Whereas a so-called Sonnenhaus (solar house) is only allowed to carry the name if solar energy covers at least half of its heat demand, the objectives of the German FASA even go a step further. With scientific support from the Technical University of Freiberg, the building contractor created the ENERGETIKhaus100: a possibility to go completely without oil and gas and instead cover up to 98% of the energy demand for heating and hot water by solar energy. The results of a monitoring programme, which the University of Freiberg conducted in an ENERGETIKhaus100 in Berthelsdorf/Saxony over a 5-year period (see photo), have confirmed the high share in renewable sources. FASA built the first 100 % solar house in cooperation with Timo Leukefeld’s former solar installation company Soli fer Solardach in 2006. In the meantime, the contractor has set up almost 50 houses of this type.

„Solar thermal systems are used to improve the coefficient of performance of the heat pump”

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on December 30, 2010

Dietmar Lange” Has observed the German solar thermal market for decades: Graduate engineer Dietmar Lange had, for many years, been Technical Director at various German collector manufacturers and solar thermal system providers until he became a freelance consultant two years ago. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with him about the technological trends and political developments on the largest European market.
