Moldova: Vacuum Tube Collector Assembly Line Inaugurated

Inauguration MoldavaMoldova saw the commissioning of an assembly line for vacuum tube collectors in what used to be the large halls of a manufacturing plant. The owner of the premises is Raut, based in the city of Balti, who repurposed the location after succeeding in the government’s tender invitation at the end of 2016. The line, funded by the Polish government and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), was implemented based on a technology partnership with Makroterm, a vacuum tube collector assembler from Cracow, Poland. Pakistan: UNIDO Suggests Policies for Renewables in Industrial Applications

At the request of the Pakistani government, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched a project titled Sustainable Energy Initiative for Industries in Pakistan to promote the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and services in Pakistan’s industries. But despite the country’s great energy demand and huge solar potential, the study says little about solar thermal usage 
 

UNIDO India: Great Potential and Efforts to Increase Awareness of Concentrating Solar Thermal

Dr Anil MisraThe new interest subvention scheme for Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) technologies administrated by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) is now open for applications. The scheme has been developed in cooperation with the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) during the GEF-UNIDO-MNRE project, which focuses on increasing the deployment of concentrating solar thermal systems for process heat applications in India. “Technology providers or beneficiaries can use a short-term bridge loan at normal interest rates for pre-financing the 30 % capital subsidy that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy grants for CST technologies,” explained Dr Anil Misra, National Project Manager at UNIDO (see photo). IREDA also hands out long-term loans covering up to 45 % of the benchmark system cost at 5 % lower-than-usual interest rates. The remaining 25 % are required as equity by the beneficiary.
 

Nicaragua: Soft Loan to Fund EUR 4 Million Project

Hospital ManaguaThere is now nothing in the way of constructing an impressive solar heating and cooling installation in Nicaragua. At the end of September, the last signatures were placed under the contract documents for a 4,450 m² collector field which will supply air conditioning and warm water to the Hospital Militar Escuela Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños in Managua (see photo), the capital city of the central American nation. “Installation work will start in January 2017, and commissioning is planned for the second quarter of next year,” was how Christian Holter, Managing Director of S.O.L.I.D, outlined the ambitious plan. The Austrian turnkey system supplier had been struggling for over three years to receive financing for the 4 million EUR project in form of a soft loan, a financing instrument for developing countries.

India: Government Presents 102 Awards for Solar Process Heat and Solar Cooking

India Award 2016(1)Piyush Goyal, Indian Minister of State for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, awarded prizes to 102 institutions, companies and agencies for their achievements in high-temperature solar process heat and cooking. The photo shows the minister calling on the manufacturers to share their innovative ideas and make India a unique place for the demonstration of solar process heating technologies. The Concentrated Solar Technology Excellence Awards 2016 ceremony was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in cooperation with the GEF-UNDP programme for concentrating solar thermal and took place in New Delhi on 29 April 2016. This was the first time in the history of India’s solar thermal industry that so many awards were presented at only one event. Additionally, 37 projects from all over the country received sanction letters for the MNRE capital subsidy and GEF-UNDP support scheme.

Egypt and India: UNIDO Supports Industrial Solar Heat

UNIDOThe United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) started two projects in the first quarter of this year with the aim of increasing the deployment of solar process heat: January of 2015 marked the launch of a 5-year programme in cooperation with the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote business models for an increased market penetration and scale of concentrated solar thermal heating and cooling applications. Three months later, UNIDO launched the 5-year programme Utilizing Solar Energy for Industrial Process Heat in Egyptian Industry together with the Egyptian Ministry of Industry, Trade and Small and Medium Enterprises. Both projects are funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Renewable Energy in Industrial Applications. An assessment of the 2050 potential (2010)

Up to 21% of all final energy use and feedstock in manufacturing industry can be provided by renewable energies by 2050, concludes UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, on this report published in 2010.

The publication sheds some light on the use of renewable energies (biomass, solar thermal, heat pumps) in industrial applications. Although widely known for its use in residential applications, renewable energies are less common in manufacturing.
