The National Energy Efficiency Action Plan for Lebanon NEEAP 2011-2015

This report presents the national energy efficiency action plan (NEEAP) for Lebanon for the years 2011-2015. The action plan is presented in two different formats: Section 1- including the 14-initiative narrative NEEAP, and Section 2- including the tabulated format. The proposed NEEAP is also developed in accordance with the different points mentioned in the declaration of the Lebanese Government relating to energy efficiency and renewable energy, namely the set strategic target of 12% renewable energy by 2020.

Market Assessment Report and Solar Thermal Action Plan for the Mediterranean Region

“The Mediterranean region is endowed with a significant market potential and could become a frontrunner in the development of solar water heating and cooling technologies in several application areas.” This is one conclusion of the study “Solar Thermal in the Mediterranean Region - Market Assessment Report” published in September 2012. The association Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME) worked on both the report and a “Solar Thermal Action Plan” for the Mediterranean Region, which was published in December 2012, on behalf of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (see the attached documents).

India: 90 Process Heat Projects with Concentrating Collectors in Five Years

 Workshop on UNDP – GFE Project On 19 May 2012, the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Tarun Kapoor, announced the official launch of the initiative Market Development and Promotion of Solar Concentrator based Process Heat Applications. In cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the MNRE will support 30 demonstration projects (15,000 m²) and 60 replication projects (30,000 m²) of process heat applications with concentrating solar thermal collectors across at least five different sectors between 2012 and 2017. The aim is to create a wealth of information about all of the supported projects, including feasibility studies, detailed project reports and performance results.

Argentina: Solar Water Heaters for Rural Schools

 Map ArgentinaIn Argentina, Jorge Follari of Innovar SRL observes a rising interest in solar thermal energy. The federal and the province governments support the installation of solar water heaters in rural schools, and the interest of private customers grows, too – especially in the northern provinces, such as Corrientes, Salta, Tucumán, San Luis, Santa Fe and Catamarca. Compared to the commonly used gas bottles, a solar system pays off in 2 to 3.5 years. On the other hand, gas and electricity are highly subsidised.

Chile: Solar Energy Workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean

Abdel Hai, Programme Officer for the Energy Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (left), and Eduardo Noboa, Renewable Energy and Environment Coordinator from the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE), organised a two-day workshop with the aim to strengthen the solar water heating markets in Latin America and the Caribbean. A total of 46 solar thermal experts from several countries (Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay) exchanged information, knowledge, lessons learned and successful experiences.

Solar Water Heating Applications : Assessment of Country Successes- South-East Asia

The objective of this report is to provide an overview of successful projects on solar water heating technology implemented by several organizations in five selected countries : Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The report presents detail discussion on solar water heaters system components, design and installation practices and life cycle cost evaluation for five successful nationwide projects/initiatives that helped in catalysing the uptake of Solar Water Heating technology in each the five Asian countries.

Regional Workshop Presentation on the Situation of Solar Thermal Energy Market in Latin America and Caribbean (2011)

This is a presentation made during the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Regional Workshop of Solar Thermal Water Heating in Chile in June 2011. India: Call for low-cost Solar Water Heaters in Himalayan Region

 Himalaya Map” The current use of Solar Water Heaters (SWHs) in India's Himalayan region remains rather limited, if not scarce. Including Jharkhand, the region's total installed collector area has been estimated at around 33,000 m2 until the end of 2010, which is less than 1% of the total installed SWH capacity in the country. Most of the existing systems are part of commercial and institutional buildings, whereas the domestic sector makes very little use of SWHs. These are some of the results of the study “Market assessment of solar water heating systems in the Himalayan Region” carried out by Greentech Knowledge Solutions on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Assessment of the World Bank/GEF Strategy for the Market Development of Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (2006)

This report from 2006 gives a detailed assessment on the approach of GEF towards concentrating solar power development. In particular it looks into the GEF's Operational Programme 7 (OP 7) which deals with the development of technologies with low greenhouse gas emissions that are not yet commercial, but which show promise of becoming so in the future.

Barriers to Technology Diffusion: the Case of Solar Thermal Technologies (2006)

This joint paper from the OECD and IEA (October 2006) looks into the different barriers that exist which prevent solar thermal technologies to deliver its real potential. Next to listing the barriers, the document also looks into means to overcome these, the existing technologies & markets and identifies best practices which can be used by policy makers in both industrialised and developing countries.
