India: Government Presents 102 Awards for Solar Process Heat and Solar Cooking

India Award 2016(1)Piyush Goyal, Indian Minister of State for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, awarded prizes to 102 institutions, companies and agencies for their achievements in high-temperature solar process heat and cooking. The photo shows the minister calling on the manufacturers to share their innovative ideas and make India a unique place for the demonstration of solar process heating technologies. The Concentrated Solar Technology Excellence Awards 2016 ceremony was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in cooperation with the GEF-UNDP programme for concentrating solar thermal and took place in New Delhi on 29 April 2016. This was the first time in the history of India’s solar thermal industry that so many awards were presented at only one event. Additionally, 37 projects from all over the country received sanction letters for the MNRE capital subsidy and GEF-UNDP support scheme.

India: UNDP-MNRE Workshop Addresses Solar Process Heat Business Development

Intersolar UNDPThe International Workshop on Concentrating Solar Technologies set a new record in participation: Over 150 delegates attended the event in November in Mumbai organised by the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the auspices of the UNDP-GEF project on Concentrated Solar Heat (CSH). Its highlight: the discussions with industry experts and programme officials, during which the industry stakeholders called for greater R&D budgets and a performance-based incentive.

India: Solar System Suppliers Call for Solar Process Heat Obligation

SKF TechnologiesThe Indian industry imports 80 % of the oil it consumes for heating, boiling, drying or other purposes. The government of India has spent USD 112.748 billion in financial year 2014-15 on the import of these 189.43 million tons of crude oil. Solar thermal is seen as a key technology for reducing government spending and greenhouse gas emissions in the industry on the subcontinent. Despite being heavily subsidised, solar process heat installations are still rare across the country. Now, the solar thermal industry is calling for additional regulations in form of a Renewable Heating Obligation to speed up the deployment of solar thermal technology in the manufacturing sector. Egypt and India: UNIDO Supports Industrial Solar Heat

UNIDOThe United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) started two projects in the first quarter of this year with the aim of increasing the deployment of solar process heat: January of 2015 marked the launch of a 5-year programme in cooperation with the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote business models for an increased market penetration and scale of concentrated solar thermal heating and cooling applications. Three months later, UNIDO launched the 5-year programme Utilizing Solar Energy for Industrial Process Heat in Egyptian Industry together with the Egyptian Ministry of Industry, Trade and Small and Medium Enterprises. Both projects are funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

India: Industry Association Demands Dedicated Harmonised System Codes for Imports

VTC IndiaIndia is one of the largest global importers of vacuum tubes used in solar thermal collectors – also because there has not yet been a business manufacturing them locally. Market volume amounted to an estimated 4 million vacuum tubes in 2014, which are currently imported under four different Harmonized System (HS) codes, with each of them referring to another type of application. Because of a lack of certified standards for vacuum tube collectors, some dealers are taking undue advantage of the situation and fall prey to sub-standard quality at cheaper prices. As a result, India has virtually become a “dumping ground” while the number of complaints has been on the rise.

India: Association Discusses Alternative Support Measures Including Successful Solar By-Law in Bengaluru

India Market DevelopementThe Indian solar water heater market is undergoing a transition, from capital subsidies to a slowly intensifying market on a self-sustaining basis. The industry had to face a severe drop in volume in financial year 2014-15, with 0.88 million m² of newly installed collector area after the national capital subsidy scheme was halted in July 2014, which was almost 40 % less than in the boom year of 2012-13 with 1.43 million m². To discuss alternative ways of fostering the deployment of solar heating technology, the Solar Thermal Federation of India (STFI) joined forces with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to organise a workshop entitled Roadmap for Solar Water Heater Business in India in New Delhi at the end of July. During the workshop, industry representatives proposed several support measure alternatives to capital subsidies – a promising one are solar obligations represented in case studies such as the successful one in Bengaluru, Karnataka state.

Estimated Global Solar Thermal Turnover in 2013: around EUR 18 billion

TurnoverSolar heating and cooling is not really the most transparent sector regarding market and industry figures. There is no global solar heat industry council and companies around the globe are using quite different technologies and supply chains – which is exactly why all entities and brand associations have so far hesitated to publish a worldwide turnover for the solar thermal industry. This news piece by German agency solrico will make the first attempt at assessing the sector’s global turnover, which it estimates at EUR 17.996 billion. The following text will list all of the assumptions and estimations done to get to that number, so that any stakeholder or organisation with additional or different information may contact us to improve the assessment (epp@solrico.com). The chart on the left shows the distribution of newly installed, glazed collector area in 2013, and the chart on the right depicts the regional share in 2013 turnover.

India: PRINCE Offers Solar Cooking Workshops for New Entrepreneurs

Prof. Ajay ChandakIndian organisation Prince – Promoters, Researchers and Innovators in New and Clean Energy – is offering training workshops on residential and institutional solar cooking to new entrepreneurs who manufacture or trade solar cooking systems. PRINCE has already conducted more than twelve workshops, and according to the organisation, more than 60% of the solar dish cooker manufacturers and suppliers registered with the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) have benefitted from PRINCE’s training courses. RE-Invest Establishes India as New Global Renewable Hub

RE-Invest 2015RE-Invest 2015, the first Renewable Energy Global Investors Meet & Expo, organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), showcased the Indian government's commitment to the development and uptake of renewable energy in India, in order to meet the national energy requirement in a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable manner. The conference held in New Delhi from 15 to 17 February brought together the global investment community and renewable energy stakeholders from India. The photo shows the industry panel Make in India II, which was attended by representatives of well-known renewable energy manufacturers, among them D V Manjunatha, Founder and Managing Director of flat plate collector and tank manufacturer Emmvee Solar Systems (first from left). He bought back the 50 % stake in his company from Danish Solarcap in June 2014 and is now again the sole owner of a company with a turnover of between EUR 9 and 11 million and around 200 employees.

India: Statistics to Determine Vacuum Tube Market Share

India Market StatisticsFlat plate collectors – India’s dominant solar thermal technology about a decade ago – has lost a significant portion of its market share in recent years. Although the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the Indian authority responsible for solar heating statistics, has never published an official figure for the market share of vacuum tube collectors in a given year, a June 2013 interview with former MNRE Director Veena Sinha revealed that the share of vacuum tubes in the residential sector was close to 60 % in Financial Year 2012-2013. The 2014 statistics of online portal Solarwhin still show just about the same percentage: Of the 607,751 m² of subsidised collector area in 2014, 61 % were vacuum tube collectors (369,292) and 39 % flat plate collectors (238,459 m²) – see also the attached PDF, which resulted from a query to the online Solarwhin database. The pie chart above shows the Indian states in which most of the collector area was installed in 2014.
