USA: Commercial Systems Dominate Californian Solar Thermal Market

California Incentive ProgrammeThe California Solar Initiative (CSI) – Thermal Program seems to have stabilised at around 20,000 m² (or around 200,000 ft²) of subsidised collector area per year. Commercial applications dominate the statistics, although there was a spike in the share of residential systems in 2016. The peak in applications for commercial pool heating in 2014 was due to the late addition of this type of system to the state subsidy scheme. It took almost a year before the level of incentives and other requirements were set, so that all the applications piling up over that period had to be processed in 2014. The data in the chart was provided by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and shows the subsidised and installed collector area for each year.

World Map of Solar Process Heat Specialists 2017

Worldmap Process HeatIndustrial solar heat is far from being a standard yet, but it is more widespread than you might think. The first World Map of Solar Process Heat Specialists shows 71 companies in 22 countries which reported almost 400 reference systems. Together with additional plants included in the online portal ship-plants.info, the world market for industrial process heat comprises at a minimum 525 plants with an collector or mirror area of at least 416,414 m².

Worldwide: Flat Plate Collector Manufacturer Ranking

Collector Ranking 2015The ranking of the largest flat plate collector manufacturers is headed by the same four companies as last year: Greenonetec from Austria, Fivestar from China, Soletrol from Brazil and Bosch Thermotechnik from Germany. But aside from the continuity at the top, last year shows what different paths some markets have taken. Whereas Australian-based Solahart, one of the pioneers of global solar collector trade, as well as Soletrol, the largest Brazilian manufacturer, have lost ground, several others – such as Sunrain from China, Hewalex from Poland and Eraslan from Turkey – were able to report above-average growth for 2015 and rise through the ranks. The produced collector area of the overall 21 companies added up to 4,212,462 m². The number was 21 and not 20 because the last and second-last spot were occupied by companies with equal production output.

#SolarThermal: Increasing Visibility through Harmonised Hashtags

HashtagsThe solar heating and cooling (SHC) sector needs to increase visibility on social media channels. This was the shared belief of the three major SHC institutions – the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF), the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA SHC) and solarthermalworld.org – which met at the beginning of 2016 to discuss relevant strategies. The group saw Twitter as an important communication channel among policy makers, lobbyists and industry associations – a tool which is also used by a growing number of journalists worldwide for their research. The institutions decided to campaign for harmonised hashtags regarding content related to solar heating and cooling on Twitter, in order to increase visibility and improve the search functionality. 

China: Sunrain to Solve Pengpusang’s Financial Troubles

PengpusangChinese flat plate collector manufacturer Pengpusang (international brand Prosunpro) from Shenzhen in southern China seems to have overcome its financial difficulties: “We continue to produce absorbers and collectors and have six colleagues in the overseas sales team,” Alon Ryan confirmed at the end of February. The Vice Director-Overseas of the Marketing Department emphasised that there was “no stop in production, and we are still supplying all our important customers.” The photo shows the anodisation of absorber fins on the factory line in Shenzhen.

Worldwide: Largest Flat Plate Collector Manufacturers in 2013

The number one in the ranking of the worldwide largest flat plate collector manufacturers based on collector area produced in 2013 is still Austrian OEM collector manufacturer Greenonetec, followed by three non-European manufacturers from BRICS countries: Soletrol from Brazil, as well as two companies from China, Prosunpro and Five Star. Germany’s largest flat plate collector manufacturer, Bosch Thermotechnik, only came in fifth place, down from being second in the previous ranking in 2012. German agency solrico created the ranking after carrying out a worldwide survey among companies serving the solar thermal sector in September and October 2014. Who has ranked how well this year shows a lot about the international trends of the global solar thermal industry.

Ukraine: Political Instability Hurts Business

AfrosUkraine’s solar thermal market has been adversely affected by the country’s currently very unstable economic, political and social situation. The industry agrees that customers are cautious about spending money during politically and socially uncertain times. Solar thermal stakeholders also note that one of the failures of the government and of politics in general has been to not follow through with laws, projects and promises, something which has almost become a tradition in every field, including renewables. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with some of the collector manufacturers and importers about their business situation in times of widespread instability.

Ukraine: First Demonstration Projects Pave the Way for Solar District Heating

Ukraine District HeatingTheoretically, the district heating networks from Soviet times could very well be supplemented by solar thermal heat. Except Poland, however, no eastern European state has had much experience with solar thermal district heating. Bulgaria and Romania have not yet had any plans or projects to combine district heating with solar thermal, but Ukraine has already taken the first step: Between 2008 and 2012, municipal utility Mariupolteploset, one of the biggest heat suppliers in Ukraine, set up three solar fields across Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, with all of them feeding into district heating networks. Other municipalities have also announced the construction of their first solar district heating demonstration systems when modernising local power stations and energy distribution networks.

Germany: World Map of Solar Process Heat Collector Industry 2014

World Map Process HeatThere is enormous demand for industrial heat in the temperature range between 100 and 250 °C all around the world, and solar thermal technologies are said to play an important role in covering this demand over the next decades. A joint project by magazine Sun & Wind Energy and German agency solrico was to find out which companies offer solar process heat collectors, what technology they focus on and how many commercial projects they have already realised. The results of the global survey now make up the first World Map of the Solar Process Heat Collector Industry, which was published in the March edition of Sun & Wind Energy and is also available for download on solrico´s website

Russia: 2014 – Year of Change and Growth

Solarthermalworld.org spoke to important Russian flat plate collector manufacturers New Polus, Inten and Kassol about the current and future trends of the national solar thermal market. According to the industry, 2014 will be the year of change and market growth for solar thermal in Russia. Growth is expected in all market segments, because people have not yet committed themselves to one type of solar thermal technology. However, there is a lack of funds in the Russian state budget, which means companies will have to move away from public contracts and turn their attention to projects in the private sector. An important barrier to solar thermal growth in the residential sector is the reluctance of construction companies. The map, which shows the factory sites of the three companies, was part of the world map of the solar thermal industry published in the December issue of Sun & Wind Energy.
