Panama: Solar Thermal to Benefit from New Building Regulations

On 17 November 2016, Panama’s secretary of energy approved Resolution No. 3142 to create a new Sustainable Construction Standard Guide with the aim of reducing energy consumption in newbuilds. The new building regulations target a 15 % reduction in energy use in newbuilds within one year and a 20 % one in two years compared to the baseline values on pages 28 and 29 of the attached document. The authors of the guide consider solar thermal to be one of the most preferable solutions to achieve these efficiency targets (see page 53). However, there has not been an effective mechanism in place to implement the suggested changes and ensure compliance. Additionally, the Panamanian government is coordinating with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to establish a new support scheme for solar thermal.

IEA SHC: Industry Workshop in Spain Shows Solar Cooling’s Global Opportunities

Task 43 WorkshopThe latest R&D developments in solar cooling presented during a workshop in Madrid, Spain, on 11 April sparked great interest among the attendees from the international air conditioning industry. Held at the headquarters of the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving, IDEA, the event brought together representatives from companies, such as Baxi Roca, Carrier, Fujitsu, Kaysun and Panasonic, as well as researchers from Task 53, New Generation Solar Cooling and Heating Systems, of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. The presentations showcased innovative solutions driven by solar heat or solar power. The experts agreed that solar cooling will be a market for both solar thermal and solar PV solutions over the coming years and will capture new territory outside Europe, such as in the Middle East or China. A current study on the Arab region concluded: PV cooling technologies are more economical than grid-driven electric chillers at cooling loads of 100 kWc, whereas solar thermal cooling should be used for 1 MWc cooling.

SHC2015: The Challenge of Smart Heating

After several quickly receding waves of smart home hypes, the current trend to link devices in residential homes seems comparably stable. Drivers of the development are energy, security and comfort. Although new products and services for smart homes focus on electricity usage, Uwe Trenkner is convinced that modern communication technologies are another important factor for solar heating. The consultant from Brussels, Belgium, was co-author of the Technical Study Report on Measuring, Remote Monitoring and Remote Controlling for Solar Thermal Systems, which was published at the end of last year (see the attached document). Solarthermalworld.org interviewed the expert during the Solar Heating and Cooling Conference (SHC2015) in Istanbul, Turkey, in December 2015.
 

MENA: First Online Training Program on Solar Water Heaters Certification

SHAMCI TrainingIn March, the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) launched an online training program on the Solar Water Heaters (SWHs) Quality Assurance and Certification Scheme in the Arab region. The training course aims to provide participants with sufficient knowledge on SWH quality and certification schemes, such as the Solar Heating Arab Mark and Certification Initiative (SHAMCI). Participants can register for the training course online. According to the RCREEE, it is the first online training in the Middle East and North Africa region. The implementation of the course was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Applications of UNEP’s Strategy: Engaging Local Bank for Lending (2014)

Regional Market Assessment Report in the Mediterranean Countries

The purpose of this regional market assessment report is to help overcome some relevant barriers which currently prevent solar water heating (SWH) systems from providing a larger share of energy supply in Mediterranean countries, i.e. the lack of knowledge and trust on the technology, as well as the lack of systematic statistics on the solar thermal market and industry, and the very limited return on experiences.

Montenegro: Montesol is dead, long live Montesol!

Montesol, the expired credit line for the installation of solar water heaters in Montenegrin households, may be extended, according to a source at Montenegro’s Directorate for Energy Efficiency (DoEE). In July 2011, the second phase of Montesol was launched as a joint project between the Montenegrin Ministry of Economy, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS). Initially, it was thought to end on 31 October 2013. “First, we signed an extension to the partnership agreement with the UNEP to extend the programme until 31 December 2013. Now, we are working on an amendment in order to continue Montesol´s implementation,” a DoEE spokesperson replied to a media enquiry, without giving specific information about the future conditions and terms of the Montesol programme. 

Market Assessment Report and Solar Thermal Action Plan for the Mediterranean Region

“The Mediterranean region is endowed with a significant market potential and could become a frontrunner in the development of solar water heating and cooling technologies in several application areas.” This is one conclusion of the study “Solar Thermal in the Mediterranean Region - Market Assessment Report” published in September 2012. The association Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME) worked on both the report and a “Solar Thermal Action Plan” for the Mediterranean Region, which was published in December 2012, on behalf of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (see the attached documents).

Montenegro: First Solar Shop Opening

“May the sun always shine on you" (Vazda vas sunce grijalo): that is the motto of Tedeko Solar Energy, a Montenegrin company specialised in solar thermal and photovoltaic energy. Tedeko is located in the town of Tivat at the picturesque Adriatic coast. At the beginning of October, the company opened its first solar shop in the country (see photo). Lazar Kordić, the manager who runs the shop, is satisfied with the first week of business. “Some twenty people gathered at the opening,” he says. The following days confirmed his expectations that the solar shop will be of interest to his potential clients, Kordić adds. “There were both engineers and architects present. This seems very promising for our future development.”

MNRE Congrats for Winners of UNDP GSWH Project

India has been one of the great beneficiaries of the Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative (GSWH Project). The initiative, which was financed and implemented by the UN organisations UNDP/UNEP and GEF, has sought to speed up the growth of the solar water heater market around the globe. To reach its aim, the GSWH project has chosen a variety of options: generate demand, strengthen the supply chain, adopt quality measures and establish a supportive regulatory environment. The UNDP team has already pointed to India as the most successful example among the benefitting countries. To honour valuable contributions, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organised a National Workshop on 23 August 2012 in New Delhi. At the workshop, the Energy Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, presented a total of thirteen awards to State Nodal Agencies, municipal corporations and Channel Partners. The GSWH project started in September 2008 and will end by December 2012.
