IEA SHC: Industry Workshop in Spain Shows Solar Cooling’s Global Opportunities

Task 43 WorkshopThe latest R&D developments in solar cooling presented during a workshop in Madrid, Spain, on 11 April sparked great interest among the attendees from the international air conditioning industry. Held at the headquarters of the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving, IDEA, the event brought together representatives from companies, such as Baxi Roca, Carrier, Fujitsu, Kaysun and Panasonic, as well as researchers from Task 53, New Generation Solar Cooling and Heating Systems, of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. The presentations showcased innovative solutions driven by solar heat or solar power. The experts agreed that solar cooling will be a market for both solar thermal and solar PV solutions over the coming years and will capture new territory outside Europe, such as in the Middle East or China. A current study on the Arab region concluded: PV cooling technologies are more economical than grid-driven electric chillers at cooling loads of 100 kWc, whereas solar thermal cooling should be used for 1 MWc cooling.

SHC 2015: 14 Expert Interviews on Research Highlights and Technology Trends on Tape

From 2 to 4 December 2015, the SHC2015 conference in Istanbul brought together 233 researchers, industry specialists and other experts on solar heating and cooling. With 14 video interviews filmed at the conference, solarthermalworld.org highlighted the trends and pinpointed the crucial issues of today's global solar heating and cooling sector. The videos were jointly financed by the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and the European Copper Association. They are available for download on the solarthermalworld.org YouTube channel.
 

Technologies and Perspectives of Solar Cooling Systems (2014)

This presentation, given by Dr. Uli Jakob of Solem Consulting, at the AHK (German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce) conference in Sydney in March 2014, gives an update on the technologies and perspectives of solar cooling systems.  It covers the different technologies used, such as sorption chillers, integrated hydraulic units and standardized solar cooling kits.  It also provides a short overview of solar collector technologies for solar cooling.

Australia: Country to Publish First Solar Air Conditioning Standard

In April, two workshops for solar cooling took place in Asia. At the beginning of the month, a workshop in Singapore focused on the use of solar cooling in tropical regions and gathered around 70 participants from research and industry (see photo). The workshop took place at Cleantech One, which is part of Singapore’s clean technology centre. Cleantech One also hosts the Asia office of Austrian turnkey system provider S.O.L.I.D. and the energy research institute ERI@N of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). They both organised the workshop together with the International Energy Agency (IEA). A week later, almost 80 solar cooling specialists participated in the Australian Solar Cooling 2013 Conference in Sydney, an event by the Australian Solar Cooling Interest Group (ausSCIG). Solarthermalworld.org has picked out the highlights from the presentations held at the two workshops.

It gives a sprawling overview of the solar cooling market by 2012, beginning with an overview of the different collector and chiller technologies currently on the international market. It also lists the solar cooling kit suppliers across different global regions.

Australia: Economics of Solar Thermal, PV-based and Conventional Cooling System (2010)

 Lifetime Costs” In Australia, solar cooling is still a niche technology - despite good solar resources and a large air-conditioning and refrigeration market. The multiple market barriers which prevent the technology from achieving greater market shares are mostly economic in nature. During a presentation at the 9th IIR Gustav Lorentzen Conference 2010 in Sydney, Dr Paul Kohlenbach, Director of international solar cooling consultancy Solem Consulting, and Dr Mike Dennis of the Australian National University, highlighted these market barriers and opportunities for solar cooling in Australia. Kohlenbach himself has additionally carried out a study comparing the economics of a solar thermal, a PV-based and a conventional cooling system over a 20-year lifespan.

Australia: Solar Cooling for Dairy Farms and Cold Stores (2009)

Solar cooling systems on dairy farms possess a high impact on the energy consumption of such businesses. Solar energy can contribute up to 80 % of the total cooling load and 57 to 65 % of the hot water load for a typical dairy farm, according to a study carried out by Australian company Solem Consulting in June 2009 on behalf of Sustainability Victoria (see attached document).
