“Contract market fluctuates from year to year”

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on April 17, 2018
Ole Dalby, CEO of Arcon-Sunmark2017 was a difficult year for solar district heating supplier Arcon-Sunmark based in Denmark. The collector manufacturer’s turnover dropped from Danish Krone (DKK) 457 million, or USD 75 million, to DKK 98 million, or USD 16.2 million, according to a press release published on 21 March 2018. The uncertain country’s energy policy caused a delay in the launch of new SDH projects in the second half of 2016. Consequently, pre-tax profit went from DKK 46 million (USD 7.6 million) in 2016 to minus DKK 99 million (USD 16.3 million) in 2017. “We have made the necessary adjustments. At the same time, we have invested in retaining the clear market leader position that we achieved over the years,” Ole Dalby, CEO of Arcon-Sunmark (see photo), said.

Flat plate collector sales in China reach a record 6 million m2 in 2017

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on March 10, 2018
2017 saw again an increase in flat plate collector area in China. Newly installed flat plate collector area rose by 13 %, whereas vacuum tube collector area declined by 9 % (see the table at the end of this article). Estimates by CSTIF, the Chinese Solar Thermal Industry Federation, put the size of the 2017 flat plate collector market at 6.03 million m2 (4,221 MWth). Jinheng Solar, a flat plate collector manufacturer based in Dezhou in Shandong province, responded to the positive development by expanding production capacity last year. CSTIF embarks on a journey of innovation and quality

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on January 25, 2018
CSTIF conference 2017CSTIF invited its members to the annual assembly, held in early December in Jinan, Shandong Province, to discuss the state of the market in China. Titled Innovation and quality: Embark on a journey into a new era, this event with around 400 members of the Chinese Solar Thermal Industry Federation presented an opportunity for CSTIF’s Executive Director Xiaoli Zhang to announce the latest market figures. 2017 saw the installation of 37.23 million m² of collector area, a decline of 5.7 % compared to the year before. Still, the drop in sales was less than in 2016, when the market declined by 9 %. The total capacity in operation rose to 478 million m² (334.46 GWth).

IEA Task 55: Solar District Heating Means Big Business

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on May 23, 2017
Task 55Solar district heating is attractive business. Not only does this become obvious when looking at the 347 MWth of newly installed SDH capacity in Denmark in 2016, but also when one hears about Big Solar, a 250 MWth collector field – with 1.8 million m² of seasonal storage – planned to cover 20 % of the energy demand in the Austrian city of Graz by 2020. It certainly explains the high interest in international research platform Towards the Integration of Large SHC Systems into DHC Networks, or Task 55 of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. “We welcomed 33 participants from eight countries during our second project meeting in Aalborg in mid-March, and even had to limit the number of participants per company because of the huge demand,” explained Sabine Putz, Operating Agent of Task 55 and COO and Head of R&D at S.O.L.I.D.

Denmark: New Solar District Heating World Record

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on January 26, 2017
SilkeborgThe Danish town of Silkeborg now holds the record for having the world’s largest solar heating system. The SDH plant of 156,694 m² (110 MWth) came online as scheduled in December 2016 after only seven months of construction. Municipal utility Silkeborg Forsyning intends to use the harnessed solar energy to meet 20 % of the annual heating demand of the 21,000 plant-connected users. The solar field was divided into four subfields to make it possible to set up the installation and hydraulics systems on this irregularly shaped piece of land (see photo). The former record holder is another installation in Denmark, in Vojens, boasting 70,000 m² (48.90 MWth) of installed solar thermal capacity. Both plants were turnkey deliveries from Danish collector manufacturer Arcon-Sunmark.

China: Export Duties Push Up Vacuum Tube Prices

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on October 16, 2014
Vacuum tubesWhoever is purchasing vacuum tube collectors from China these days can certainly not complain about getting contradictory information: There are those suppliers which are already charging their clients 17 % more for vacuum tubes because of altered export taxation, whereas others sell their vacuum tubes at the same price as they did in the past. The notable price differences result from a decision by some Chinese provinces to change their HS code for vacuum tubes. The tubes used to be under HS code 84199010, as a part of solar water heaters, and as such, they were exempt from export duty. For example, the authority in Zhejiang province changed the classification to HS code 7020009990 for glassware, which stipulates a 17 % export duty.

Bulgaria: “People now know that solar thermal can help them avoid high energy bills”

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on June 3, 2013

“Bulgaria has a new government and in my opinion, energy efficiency and sustainable technology should be its top priority,” Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev said after a meeting with Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, in Sofia at the end of May. At the same time, the Inter Expo Center Sofia opened its doors for the ninth South-East European Exhibition and Congress on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, at which companies from ten countries presented innovative green energy solutions. Vacuum tube collector producer Sunrain Solar Energy was the only Chinese company at the fair.

China: More than 50,000 Solar Shops

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on June 12, 2012

Solar Shops in China The Chinese solar thermal industry has set up a highly organised distribution network based on more than 50,000 solar shops all around the country. The market researchers of the Sun´s Vision, located in Dezhou, estimate that around 20,000 of these shops are franchise businesses, which deal in one brand only. They belong to one of the top four collector manufacturers Himin Solar, Sunrain Group, Sangle Solar or Linuo Paradigma. The photo shows a franchise partner shop of Linuo Paradigma (left) and Sangle (right) in the city of Jinan, Shandong province. Most shops, however, sell more than one brand of solar energy equipment.

China: Fully integrated Vacuum Tube Production Line now also at Tsinghua

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on June 23, 2011

Inauguration of almost fully integrated vacuum tube production line at Tsinghua” Tsinghua is the fifth Chinese manufacturer to inaugurate an almost fully integrated vacuum tube production line. At the end of April, the company based in Beijing invited stakeholders from politics, research and the solar thermal sector to visit the factory. Himin was the first to commission automated production lines in Dehzou in 2009. The Linuo Group celebrated the opening of its new factory in Zhangqiu, Jinan province, in July 2010. Sunrain/Micoe followed in October 2010 with the inauguration of a new factory in Luoyang, Henan province. And Sunshore has produced vacuum tubes at its new factory site since the beginning of the year 2011. Photo: Tsinghua
