Europe: Solar Keymark Network Approves New Complaint Procedures

SKN Complaint ProceduresThe Solar Keymark Network (SKN) discussed and approved new complaint procedures during its most recent meeting on the Greek island of Crete in mid-October 2016. Action had to be taken, as the first series of complaints filed in late 2015 against Swedish test lab SP about the certificates of Danish collector manufacturer Arcon-Sunmark was not resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved. The results of the October meeting are described in a publicly available draft of the minutes on the SKN webpage.
 

Global Solar Certification Network: Facilitating International High-Quality Collector Trade

GSCN partnersThe recent approval of Working Rules means that the Global Solar Certification Network (GSCN) can now accept membership applications. The reuse of test and inspection reports in different certification schemes will be possible at the beginning of 2017. The GSCN was developed in Task 43 of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme to facilitate the cross-border trade of high-quality solar thermal products. The world map shows all the certification schemes which are already on their way into the GSCN – and more are said to follow soon. GSCN industry members can use a collector test report or a production inspection report from one of these schemes to apply for a certificate in another part of the world which is also part of GSCN. The procedure saves manufacturers time and money by removing the need for collector retesting or a second site inspection.

Germany: Debate about Voluntary Collector Output Label Solergy

Supporters SolergyThe new collector label Solergy has just been created and has already sparked a lot of debate in Germany. On the one hand, there is a growing number of collector manufacturers, associations and also the certification body DIN Certco – which are supporting the implementation of the label (see the list of logos at the beginning of November). On the other hand, there are the European bodies relevant to the solar thermal sector, such as the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF) and the Solar Keymark Network (SKN), which are not in favour of Solergy, although they do fancy the idea behind such a collector energy output label. To understand the reasons for the controversy, one has to look at the evolution of the label.

Solar Keymark: Additional Table Allows Comparison of Annual Collector Output

The Solar Keymark certification is getting more consumer-friendly: Since the beginning of this year, the new certificate data sheets include a second page on the annual collector unit output for different solar radiation sites in Europe (Stockholm, Davos, Würzburg and Athens). The list shows the output at average collector temperatures of 25, 50 and 75 °C. For example: The new optimised Aqua Plasma collector 19/17 by German collector producer Ritter achieves 1,106 kWh per collector unit and year in Würzburg (50 °C). The gas-filled flat plate collector PS1-52 Joule by Austrian company Geo-Tec achieves 793 kWh at the same location. Both collectors were launched this year with a gross collector area of 1.69 m² and were presented at the Intersolar Europe in June. The listed output should now give end consumers a good hint at what they get for their money.

Foundation to Support Proliferation of Solar Keymark Quality Standard

The Solar Keymark Network is about to establish a foundation to support the further proliferation of this quality standard. The reason for this decision can be traced back to a change in the definition of types and sub types by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and its subsequent reduction in the fees at the beginning of this year.
