Solar District Heating in Nykobing


The solar thermal district heating plant in Nykobing, on the Danish island of Sjælland, started operation in July 2014, after one year of construction time. The official inauguration in September coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the district heating network. Nykobing is one of the very few plants above 14 MWth (20,000 m2 collector area) in Denmark at the time of inauguration. The predicted solar share is 19 %. Additional heat is provided by a gas boiler, two gas engines and a 1.2 MW pellets boiler. Like most Danish solar plants, it has large-scale, ground mounted collectors, specially designed for district heating applications. The solar plant is installed on pasture land for sheep.
