Medium Scale Solar Crop Dryers for Agricultural Products in Barbados
Solar crop dryers are a cost effective solution to tackle problems related to food preservation in sunny climates.
In some communities, solar energy is often the only heat source which can be used to dry low cost agricultural products economically. However as natural gas prices are very cheap in Barbados, this solar application tends to lose its attractiveness for most operators.
This paper funded by the Inter American Development Bank and the European Development Fund and produced by the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies, University of the West Indies, describes the design and operation of medium scale solar agricultural dryers. It also compares solar dryers used for hay and onions with the ones used for fruits and timber.
The study concludes that having a dryer for one or two crops is much more efficient then having a multi-purpose dryer.
