California gets 850 MW solar steam plant for enhanced oil recovery

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on December 18, 2017
MiraahWhile Miraah in Oman (see photo) has only recently begun its solar steam production, US-based Glasspoint has already announced plans to construct another solar plant for enhanced oil recovery. Together with Aera Energy, the company intends to build an 850 MW solar steam-producing plant at the Belridge oilfields just outside Bakersfield, north of Los Angeles, California. In combination with a 26.5 MW PV system, solar energy is expected to save 4.87 billion ft³ of natural gas annually. A Glasspoint press release sent out on 30 November said that construction should start in the first half of 2019 and steam was planned to be produced by the system at the beginning of 2020.

Italy: Solar Steam for Cheese Production

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on July 24, 2015
CSP San NicoloDirect steam production, 50,000 litres of diesel saved per year and the advantage of the Italian incentive scheme for renewable heat: All these favourable conditions allowed a small dairy in Sardinia to choose a concentrated solar thermal plant with Fresnel collectors for generating 200 °C steam. The steam is used to supply heat to the industrial processes for cheese production. The investment of EUR 400,000 will have a payback period of about 4 years.

Overview of Solar Thermal Process Heat & Cooling in India (2012)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on October 2, 2014

This presentation was given by Dr. A.K. Singhal of the Indian Ministry of New & Renewable Energy at the 3rd Indo-German Energy Symposium in Delhi in May 2012.  The speaker provides a detailed overview of the various solar thermal technologies already available or still under development in India.  The presentation focuses on Solar Water Heating (SWH), Solar Air Heating, Process Heat and Solar Cooling.   SHW is well developed in India and in 2012 5.10 million m² of collectors had already been installed, with the objective to reach 18.7 million by 2022.
