International Energy Agency’s Solar Heating and Cooling Programme

The IEA Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) Programme has over 35 years of international collaborative work in the field of research, development, demonstration (RD&D) and test methods for solar thermal energy and solar buildings.  The results of this work are available for researchers, policy makers, industry, utility and business representatives, builders, architects and teachers

The IEA SHC Programme is a member-based Programme with 20 member countries and 5 member organizations. Its mission is “To enhance collective knowledge and application of solar heating and cooling through international collaboration to fulfill its vision of solar thermal energy meeting 50% of low temperature heating and cooling demand by 2050."

New ECOWAS Solar Thermal Energy Program : Background, Components, Process (2014)

On 13 June 2014, Hannes Bauer, Solar Thermal Program Manager at ECREEE, ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, gave a workshop in Cabo Verde on the new ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) Solar Thermal Energy Program. 

The 1st part of the presentation focuses on the global market growth of solar thermal collectors, showing that from 2000 to 2010 the market has increased steadily by 20% each year. It also shows that West African States were not participating during that period. 

New Report on Heat Rejection Systems for Solar Cooling (2015)

This report presents an overview of existing and novel concepts for heat rejection devices in solar cooling systems and recommends which heat rejection measures should be used under different boundary conditions (climate, system concept, etc.). Several components include a performance characterization that was prepared in partnership with manufacturers.

Contracting Models for Solar Thermally Driven Cooling and Heating Systems (2014)

This report highlights new perspectives of financing large solar thermal cooling projects with the objective to expand the use of solar cooling technologies in the public and private sectors through an improved understanding of the approaches adopted by contracting models. The work was supported by the SHC project on large scale solar heating and cooling systems (SHC Task 45).

China: First Chinese Solar Cooling Conference to Take Place in Shanghai in March

SHC ConferenceThis spring, a major event for solar cooling is going to take place in Shanghai: From 23 to 27 March 2015, the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) will jointly organise a Solar Cooling Week in the city. The week is going to start off with two Task meetings and end with the two-day Solar Cooling Conference (SCC). The SCC will take place for the very first time, be open to the public and include technical site visits on 26 March 2015, as well as a full-day conference with plenary and parallel sessions on 27 March 2015.

Norway: Research Community Visits Estate Built with Polymer Collectors

StenbratliaNorwegian collector manufacturer Aventa and the University of Oslo’s Department of Physics jointly hosted two meetings in the middle of October: The meeting of Task 39 (Polymeric Materials for Solar Thermal Applications) of the International Energy Agency’s Solar Heating and Cooling programme (IEA SHC), as well as the meeting of the EU’s SCOOP (Solar Collectors made Of Polymers) project. Both research programmes focus on the use of polymeric materials in solar thermal applications and are headed by Michael Köhl, researcher at the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Fraunhofer ISE. The photo shows the attendants of the research meeting while they were visiting Stenbråtlia: Architect Hans Dahl (middle), Prof John Rekstad, CEO of Aventa (far left) and Dr Michaela Meir, Head of R&D at Aventa (far right). Stenbråtlia consists of 34 terraced houses built according to the so-called passive house standard and equipped with roof-integrated polymer collectors from Aventa.

Solar Heat Worldwide- 2014 edition (2014)

The IEA SHC annual statistics report, Solar Heat Worldwide, provides data from 58 countries, representing more than 63% of the world's population and over 95% of the global solar thermal market. The 2014 edition reports on 2012 data.  With a growth of 9.4% in 2012, the installed capacity of solar collectors reached 269 GWth.
