- SOLAIR: Survey of Available Technical Solutions and Successful Running Systems - Cross-Country Analysis-
This paper compares existing databases of knowledge on the solar cooling applications from across Europe with SOLAIR’s own database. References are made to the SACE (Solar Air-Conditioning in Europe) project and the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHC) of the International Energy Agency.
According to the Report, previous databases concluded that 70 solar cooling installations were present in Europe in 2004 with the majority residing in Germany.
SOLAIR’s database had a different focus and therefore includes data such as:

- Barriers to Technology Diffusion: the Case of Solar Thermal Technologies (2006)-
This joint paper from the OECD and IEA (October 2006) looks into the different barriers that exist which prevent solar thermal technologies to deliver its real potential. Next to listing the barriers, the document also looks into means to overcome these, the existing technologies & markets and identifies best practices which can be used by policy makers in both industrialised and developing countries.
Three barriers to diffusion are analysed in more detail:
(1) Technical barriers,
(2) Economic barriers and
- Transition to Solar Thermal – Roadmap of Holland Solar (2007)-
With this 2007 roadmap, the Dutch solar thermal association Holland Solar, sets out a future perspective for solar thermal market development in the Netherlands based on three timeframes i.e. 2015, 2030 and 2050. The document has to be seen in the discussion on the energy transition process and underlines that a change in cultural behaviour is needed to which all stakeholders, especially companies, authorities and research institutes, have to contribute.
- The Solar Thermal Market in Thailand-
The Thai market could reach a 40% use of solar thermal energies in ten years time if the correct policies are put into place, concludes a study presented during a Renewable Energy Conference, in 2007, in Bangkok.
- The EU RES-Directive: Policy Framework and Potential for Solar Cooling in Europe-
This presentation was made at the EU Sustainable Energy Week in February 2009.
It outlines the impact of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive on the solar thermal sector, and specifically solar cooling.
The compulsory national targets for renewables as well as the obligations for new and existing buildings are seen as strong drivers for the sector, however there is much responsibilty resting with the national authorities for sound implementation of the Directive.
- Market Report for Small and Medium-Sized Solar Air-Conditioning Appliances Analysis of Market Potential-
This Report focuses on the 8 participating countries’ markets to the SOLAIR project and provides a market review and analysis of small and medium-sized solar air-conditioning (SAC) appliances.
This Report begins with a comparison with all countries markets’ status quo that is presented in a very digestible format of graphs and key data. The main section of the Report looks in depth at each country and provides an overview based on the following issues:
- Clean Power from Deserts- A document produced by the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation (TREC), in 2007, discusses the policy options and market situation of increasing the use of renewable energy in the so-called MENA region (Middle East and North Africa). According to scientists, this region will be severely threatened by water scarcity problems in the coming years. Taking that into account, this document tries to show how renewable energies could be the solution to the imminent water crisis situation, notably the use of sea water desalination, combined with solar thermal power from deserts.
- Oregon Solar Thermal Market Characterization (2004)-
This report was prepared by the Washington State University Energy Program, along with Dethman & Associates in 2004. They assess the solar thermal market in Oregon through collecting data and interviews from installers and consumers, and displayed their findings in this document.
- NEGST - New Generation of Solar Thermal Systems Project- The NEGST project, in place from 2004 to 2007, was created to introduce more cost-effective solar thermal systems, especially for domestic hot water preparation and / or space heating, in the European market, with a view to achieve the EU’s goals in terms of CO2 emissions reductions and boost the use of renewable energies.
- IREC Solar Market Trends for 2007- The Interstate Renewable Energy Council released in August 2008 the Larry Sherwood's U.S. Solar Market Trends for 2007. This report provides data on U.S. solar installations by technology, state, and market sector. It covers photovoltaics, solar thermal electric, solar hot water and space heating — including pool heating. In particular the report points out that solar hot water installations (low-temperature thermal) have boomed as a result of an increase in the federal investment tax credit.
