- Austria: Solar Foods Project Researchers Develop Tool to Optimise Processes -
During the on-going Solar Foods project, researchers from Austria are developing software to help integrate solar heat into the food and beverage industry. The software will not only show mass and heat flows in a diagram, but also help optimise them to improve energy efficiency and find the best way to establish solar heat in this sector. The project is financed by the Austrian Klima- und Energiefonds. It started in March 2011 and will run one more year. The photo shows a typical bottling plant.
Photo: AEE INTEC - User Guide for Building Solar Thermal Systems (2011)-
This is a manual for users of a solar thermal software, produced by CYPE Ingenieros. The manual provides further indication about a software that assists in designing the power network of solar thermal systems. The manual explains the software functionalities and includes an example so users can understand step-by-step how it works. Document only available in Portuguese

- RETScreen Software Solar Water Heating Workshop (2008)-
This presentation was created by National Grid, an energy service company in the northeastern United States. It was used to present at Solar Boston, a conference on solar energy in Boston, in a workshop on how to use RETScreen energy analysis software.
The presentation examines why solar thermal water heating makes sense based off the findings of a RETScreen analysis.
- EINSTEIN: Expert System for the Intelligent Use of Solar Thermal in the Industrial Sector- Using solar heating for industrial processes is still far away from being a standardised solution. Any industrial process has to be analysed and individual solutions have to be developed. To simplify this approach, a European Consortium developed EINSTEIN, a software tool which works out an energy efficient solution for the production process, based on renewable energy sources. This project is financed by Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) and coordinated by the Austrian research institute Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH.
- Modular Specification of Large-Scale Solar Thermal Systems for the Implementation of an Intelligent Monitoring System (2009)-
This 2009 paper looks into ways on how to improve the efficiency of monitoring the performance of large-scale solar thermal systems. Through the development of an ‘intelligent’ monitoring system, the researchers aim to respond to demands for a guarantee for solar energy yields which is often required by the investors.
- Software and Codes for Analysis of Concentrating Solar Power Technologies (2008)-
This 2008 document provides an overview of the various software packages and codes that have been used to support Sandia National Laboratories’ CSP research activities. The report also looks into software programmes which have been developed by other institutions or companies.
The report looks into three CSP technologies i.e. power tower systems, linear concentrator systems and dish/engine systems. For each of the technologies, an assessment of the software is made based on a hierarchy for modeling complex systems.
- The RETScreen Solar Water Heating Project Model - The RETScreen Solar Water Heating Project Model can be used worldwide to easily evaluate the energy production, life-cycle costs and greenhouse gas emissions reduction for three basic applications: domestic hot water, industrial process heat and swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), ranging in size from small residential systems to large scale commercial, institutional and industrial systems. It was built with the help of several experts from government, industry and academia and the financial support of the CanmetENERGY research centre of Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan).
