- SOLAR TEC 2012 - Middle East & North Africa Event, Cairo- Discovering the true facts about solar energy both globally and in the region, is the objective of SOLAR-TEC 2011. The trade fair and conference will take place in Cairo form 2 to 4 December 2012. The MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), is considered the world's best spot for solar power and the event is dedicated to be the informative hub for solar energy (PV and Concentrating Solar Power) in the region. SOLAR-TEC will not be limited to government and industrial application, however it will also focus on solar application for domestic and small scale application.
- Concentrating Solar Power: Global Outlook 09-
This 2009 report looks into the global outlook of concentrating solar power (CSP). The report first looks into the different CSP technologies and makes a comparison based on the advantages and disadvantages. The report also provides an overview of the CSP development by region. For certain countries per region a more detailed assessment is provided. In particular, the potential of the Mediterranean and the MENA region is being assessed.

- Solar Thermal Application in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Syria and Tunisia (2009)-
This paper is the Cairo workshop report concerning Solar Water Heater (SWH) technologies used in the six Arab countries. The workshop was organized by the Egyptian-German Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP) in cooperation with GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) and with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The aim was to compare the use of SWH technologies and to present a SWH market overview of those countries.
- Solar Energy for Heating Water in Urban Areas of Egypt (2003)-
This document provides an overview of a project financed under UN GEF Small Grants Programme to boost the use of solar thermal water heating in remote areas of Egypt. The project resulted on the installation of 164 water heaters, reaching 3,790 people, in poor villages and neighborhoods surrounding El Menia, a city in Upper Egypt.
- Concentrating Solar Power for Seawater Desalination (2008)-
The authors of this 2008 paper aim to demonstrate the importance concentrating solar power has for desalination of freshwater. Due to the projected growth in economy and population and the anticipated increase in future water consumption in the MENA region, the paper shows that the CSP technology has the potential to provide a solution for the growing water deficits.
- Solar Thermal Power Plants –Firm Capacity with 100% Renewables (2009)-
This is a presentation from the company Solar Millennium AG, made during the CUEN (Cambridge University Energy Network) 3rd annual energy conference in June 2009. It provides an overview of solar energy capacity, opportunities, technologies and market evolution possibilities. After a brief panorama of the world’ solar potential, by geographical location and type of technology, the authors explain the evolution of solar technologies since 1912 until now.
- Cyprus: 4th International Solar Air-Conditioning Conference in Lanarca-
Following Bad Staffelstein (Germany, 2005), Terragona (Spain, 2007), and Palermo (Italy, 2009), the 4th International Solar Air Conditioning Conference will now take place in Lanarca, Cyprus, from 12 to 14 October 2011. Over the years, the conference has grown into an important event, at which scientists and industrial researchers, product manufacturers, building designers and planners, contractors, and installers have met to exchange knowledge and experiences. - Thematic Review of GEF-Financed Solar Thermal Projects (2001)-
This paper reports the developments of four projects financed by the UN Global Environment Facility (GEF) in India, Morocco, Mexico and Egypt. The GEF chose those countries to develop solar thermal power technology as it has shown to be one of the most cost efficient options for renewable bulk power production, besides being the most cost-effective way of producing electricity from solar radiation.
- Status and Potentials of Renewable Energy Technologies in Lebanon and the Region (2007)-
This document released by Green Line Association, a Lebanese NGO, provides an overview of the renewable energies penetration in Lebanon and in surrounding countries (Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria). In Lebanon, collective solar water heating (SWH) systems' installations have verified an annual increase rate of 24% since 2000, whereas in the past individual SWH systems were more common. The figures show that a decrease in the purchasing costs of the systems has been positive to the market.

“Road to climate friendly chillers” is the topic of the first conference on green chillers organized by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc. (ASHRAE). The two-day event is going to take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 30 September to 1 October 2010 and receives its financial support from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) (see Event Calendar).
- Concentrating Solar Power for Seawater Desalination (2007)-
This extensive study from 2007 assesses in a detailed way the potential of concentrated solar power (CSP) systems for large scale seawater desalination. The geographical scope of the report focuses on the urban centres in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
The objective of the study is to demonstrate that these large scale CSP processes can be used to provide water supply in a balanced, affordable and secure way and as such helping avoiding a threatening fresh water deficit.

- Creating a Credit Market for Solar Thermal: the PROSOL Project in Tunisia- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been working with the finance sector since the late 1990s to develop innovative mechanisms for the promotion of sustainable energy technologies in developing countries. Through its Renewable Energy and Finance Unit, UNEP has implemented a variety of “financial catalysts” with the aim to lower risks, buy down transaction costs, build capacity and address soft market barriers that constrain sustainable energy technologies growth.
- Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (2004)-
This document was released by the International Energy Association (IEA) in 2004 to increase attention and participation for integrating solar heat into industrial processes. It also explains “medium temperature” collectors and examples of solar heat plants worldwide with their different types of collectors.
- Framework Conditions for Solar Thermal Energy Use in the Southern Mediterranean Countries-
SOLATERM is a project funded by the EU 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6).
This 2007 report provides a very good overview of the market situations in the 8 participating Mediterranean countries. It is a very useful document for policy-makers wanting an overview of recent legislative frameworks, financial incentives and market potential for growth.
- Study on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project Identification in FEMIP Countries- The Study of CDM Project Identification in FEMIP countries (Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership)aimed to: • investigate the possibilities for carbon finance and crediting activities in the Mediterranean region, identify priority sectors and make relevant recommendations; • build a pipeline of concrete CDM projects or project concepts that the European Investment Bank (EIB) could help finance in the years to come; • promote closer communication between the EIB and local CDM actors.
- Assessment of the World Bank/GEF Strategy for the Market Development of Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (2006)-
This report from 2006 gives a detailed assessment on the approach of GEF towards concentrating solar power development. In particular it looks into the GEF's Operational Programme 7 (OP 7) which deals with the development of technologies with low greenhouse gas emissions that are not yet commercial, but which show promise of becoming so in the future.
- New Technology Produces Economic Solar-Electricity Combined with Seawater Desalination (2003)-
This paper from 2003 looks into the possibility to develop a solar thermal plant in the region of Toshka, in the Nile valley. The case study which is described foresees the placing of flat mirror concentrators located between 3 to 5 meter above the ground. This would offer multiple synergy effects such as the possibility to grow plants or to build offices underneath the mirrors, thus enabling social and economic development in the area.
- Short Compendium on Solar Thermal Applications and the Solar Water Heaters Industry in the Middle East (2009)-
The report is a summary of the workshop on solar water heating (SWH) technology which took place in Cairo in March 2009. The workshop looked into the technical aspects, framework conditions and private sector needs in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Syria and Tunisia.
- International Technology Collaboration and Climate Change Mitigation - Case Study 1: CSP technologies (2004)-
This case study from 2004 was prepared by the OECD and IEA secretariats and reviews past and current experiences in international collaboration in the field of CSP technologies. In addition to identifying the success stories and the failures of CSP related international collaboration, the case study also lists four important lessons:
1) International collaboration may help, but domestic policy decisions remain decisive
2) In technology transfer non-financial barriers must not be underestimated

This paper looks into the possible applications of CSP on the coastal areas of the mediterranean region. Starting with providing a short overview on the available CSP technologies, the document also looks into what the potential and market perspectives are for this technology.
