Solar Water Heating Applications: Evaluation of Product Standards (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on February 6, 2012

This report presents the efforts of South and South-East Asian countries in adopting and developing solar water heater product standards, accredited test laboratories and certification bodies and accredited planners/installers.

The research is part of the “Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative”, co-executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)and  the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and co-founded by the Global Environnemental Fund and the International Copper Association. The International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) is in this case a regional partner.

The methodology is based on various inputs from industry experts, SWH manufacturers, organizations and local associations which promote SHW, and the IIEC regional offices. Quality tests and standards are developed and measured against the existing ISO standards. After an evaluation of the SWH standards’ situation at national levels, the paper evaluates the planning, installation and maintenance capabilities, which are crucial in ensuring the efficiency of such products.
