IEA SHC Solar Academy: Solar Heating for Industrial Processes

SHC Academy LogoResearchers have worked intensively across national borders to increase deployment of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP), which is regarded as one of the most promising solar thermal applications. When IEA SHC Task 49, Solar Heat Integration in Industrial Processes, was launched in 2012, there were reportedly around 120 SHIP systems adding up to 88 MWth. Over the last years, total installation figures have tripled to more than 500 systems and a minimum of 291 MWth globally.
 

Increasing the number of SHIP plants around the world even further will require integration concepts to be standardised and simplified and collector field costs to be cut. The researchers of Task 49 have gone to great lengths to address these challenges and will present the key findings of their work during a webinar mainly dedicated to the planning as well as development of collector technologies and hydraulic designs. The speakers will additionally highlight investment opportunities in SHIP.

This will be the second of a series of webinars organised by the IEA SHC Programme’s Solar Academy and hosted by the International Solar Energy Society. Christoph Brunner heads the Industrial Processes and Energy Systems department at AEE INTEC, Austria, and was Operating Agent of IEA SHC Task 49 Solar Heat Integration in Industrial Processes. He has managed several SHIP-related EU projects, such as EINSTEIN, Solarbrew, GREENFOODS and TrustEE.

Pedro Horta

Available Technologies, Design Procedures and Upcoming Innovations

Pedro Horta leads the group on Thermal Industrial Processes and Systems at Fraunhofer ISE, Germany. He headed the research team on Process Heat Collector Development and Process Heat Collector Testing in Task 49 and coordinates EU project InSHIP = Integrating National Research Agendas on Solar Heat for Industrial Processes.

Bärbel Epp

Investment Opportunities in Solar Heat for Industry

Bärbel Epp is Managing Director of German agency solrico – solar market research & international communication. She published the first World Map of Solar Process Heat Specialists in early 2017, is editor-in-chief of solarthermalworld.org and partner of the international Solar Payback project, which aims to increase SHIP deployment in Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa.


The SHC Solar Academy is a means to share key results of the IEA SHC Programme with stakeholders from business and science. The webinars are one of four ways in which the IEA SHC is reaching out to a global audience to exchange information and to support R&D efforts and the implementation of solar heating and cooling projects all over the world.
