ESCO Project Funding: Search for Attractive Case Studies to Fill Project Pipeline

Energy Contracting FundSolar heating and cooling has not been bankable yet despite various systems confirming expected performance and O&M costs. Project budgets are usually too small and the technology suppliers do not pass the stringent requirements of creditworthiness, which leaves the financial provider with a high-risk scenario. Accordingly, Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) have faced severe financing issues, which slow down the expansion of their business. It is good news to them that two recently launched projects also focus on facilitating the creation of an investment fund for solar thermal ESCO projects: First, there is the Feasibility Study - Energy Contracting Fund, which is jointly coordinated by the German Investment and Development Corporation Bank (DEG) and German SHC turnkey provider Industrial Solar; the second project, TrustEE – enhancing investment conditions for industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, is from the EU and has been coordinated by Austrian institute AEE INTEC.
 

Germany: Two National Awards for Solar Thermal Specialists

Within only two months, the German Federal Environment Minister, Barbara Hendriks, awarded two solar thermal companies with a high-level prize. On 23 November 2015, Austrian polymer collector developer Sunlumo received the German Federal Ecodesign Award in the category Product (left). On 21 January 2016, German Fresnel collector system supplier Industrial Solar was awarded with the German Innovation Prize for Climate and Environment (IKU) in the category Technology Transfer (right). These honours show the high innovative potential of the solar thermal industry even in times of crisis as is happening currently, with the German and Austrian solar thermal market shrinking year after year.

Webinar: New Business Models for Commercial Solar Thermal Applications

Webinar ISESThe solar thermal industry is facing a great challenge in entering new commercial solar thermal markets, be it tourism, solar process heat or large solar district heating. It needs new business models to convince commercial customers to use or to invest in solar thermal. A webinar jointly organised by International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and solarthermalworld.org on 23 June 2015 thoroughly analysed the current situation during presentations by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and three turnkey system suppliers: Industrial Solar, Germany, S.O.L.I.D., Austria, and Nextility, USA (find all four presentations attached to this news article). One thing to take away from the webinar was: Financing is a crucial bottleneck for large-scale turnkey system suppliers.

Jordan: Fresnel Collectors Supply 160 °C Steam to Pharmaceuticals Producer Ram Pharma

The Jordan Minister of Environment, Dr Taher Shakhshir, inaugurated the first solar steam system in Jordan on 17 May 2015. The Fresnel collector plant was set up on the roof of pharmaceuticals producer Ram Pharma, located at the Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein Industrial Estate about 15 km away from Amman, Jordan’s capital. The concentrating Fresnel collectors manufactured by Industrial Solar, Germany, supply steam at 160 °C to the factory’s steam grid, which provides the energy needed for sterilisation, drying and fermenting. Solar energy is said to save around 30 % of the annual diesel demand for Ram Pharma processes.

France: New ESCO Focuses on Process Heat

Logos SHIPA start-up company will host the next Task 49 meeting in Montpellier, France. This is unusual for the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, but the business target of French company Sunti is a perfect fit for Task 49, which aims at increasing solar heat integration into industrial processes. Sunti was founded in November 2014 by Jean-Michel Germa, a pioneer of the renewable industry who owns a 40 % stake in French La Compagnie du Vent. The new business wants to sell process heat to firms in France and the Mediterranean region as an Energy Service Company (ESCO).
 

Germany: Excel-Based IRR Commercial Project Calculations

IRR cash flow diagrammeGerman Fresnel collector manufacturer Industrial Solar is experiencing an increasing demand from clients all around the world: “Five years ago, we received two requests per month. Now, we receive around 50 each month and the requests are more serious,” Tobias Schwind, who is one of the Managing Directors of the company founded in 2009, confirms. Schwind has begun to notice a shift in the industry: “Whereas payback times of three to four years have, so far, been commonplace, the industry is steering towards five- to six-year periods,” he says and adds: “We, however, try to explain to our clients that they are investing in their infrastructure, and payback time is therefore not really the best criterion.” Industrial Solar offers potential clients a calculation of the Net Present Value (NPV) and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR). According to the managing director, an economic analysis based on these parameters often shows that solar process heat is worth further consideration.
 

South Africa: Fresnel Collectors Keep It Cool in MTN’s Server Rooms

Industrial SolarSince June 2014, a Fresnel collector field with 242 kWth has been feeding into the district cooling system of the MTN Group at its headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa. MTN, which has more than 200 million customers, as well as subsidiaries in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East, is one of the leading mobile operators in South Africa – and it is aware of the impact of global warming. “We continuously explore ways in which we can lessen the impact of our operations on the environment. This initiative will not only reduce our carbon footprint but it will substantially reduce our electricity consumption, which will release additional capacity for the national grid,” MTN’s CEO, Zunaid Bulbulia, was quoted as saying in a press release from 17 July 2014. The concentrating solar thermal plant powers the double-effect absorption chiller whose cooling capacity of 330 kW keeps temperatures low in the data centre at MTN’s head office.

German Centrotec Sustainable: “Increasing international business“

Centrotec Vorstand“The change at the top of Centrotec made the first quarter of 2014 an unusually turbulent one.” These were the words with which Guido A Krass (left), founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of German Centrotec Sustainable, started the annual shareholders´ meeting in Brilon, central Germany, on 20 May 2014. The long-term Chairman of the Management Board, Dr Gert-Jan Huisman, resigned with immediate effect in April 2014, to make room for the new management team of Dr Christoph Traxler (middle) and Dr Thomas Kneip, both with long-term experiences in leading positions within the Centrotec Group. Krass justified the parting with Huisman with different views on the company’s business policy, in particular regarding the future of the gas flue systems segment. “It was a friendly, but expensive resignation,” Krass said. Huisman received EUR 1 million in termination pay.

Germany: World Map of Solar Process Heat Collector Industry 2014

World Map Process HeatThere is enormous demand for industrial heat in the temperature range between 100 and 250 °C all around the world, and solar thermal technologies are said to play an important role in covering this demand over the next decades. A joint project by magazine Sun & Wind Energy and German agency solrico was to find out which companies offer solar process heat collectors, what technology they focus on and how many commercial projects they have already realised. The results of the global survey now make up the first World Map of the Solar Process Heat Collector Industry, which was published in the March edition of Sun & Wind Energy and is also available for download on solrico´s website
